How heavy should an everyday bag be? A 1 kg load line and what our 25 cm bag weighs empty

· Shopify API· 4 最小閱讀量

There is no medical threshold for bag weight, and anyone who gives you a hard number in kilograms is overselling it. What does exist is a practical working line: keep the load you put in the bag to about 1 kg, and pay attention to the bag's own weight before you buy, because that weight is fixed and you carry it on the days you carry nothing else.

Empty weight first: what 600 g means for a 25 cm bag

A 25 cm structured bag in faux shearling with a stiffened panel construction and metal hardware lands around 600 g empty. That is on the heavier side for the size, and it is honest to say why: the panels that stop the bag collapsing on a table, the lining, and a metal turn-lock rather than a magnetic closure all add grams.

The comparison that matters is not against other bags in the abstract — it is against the alternative you would have bought. An unlined nylon pouch of the same size can be under 200 g. If you only ever carry a phone and a card, that difference is the whole decision. If you want the bag to hold its shape, the 600 g is the price of it.

What people actually carry, item by item

Weighing a normal everyday load gives numbers that surprise people, mostly because of one item.

Item Typical weight
Smartphone 170–200 g
Long wallet 150–200 g
Bifold wallet 90–130 g
Key case 50–80 g
Small pouch with cosmetics 80–150 g
500 ml bottle, full 500–550 g
350 ml bottle, full 370–400 g
Folding umbrella 200–300 g
Tissues and handkerchief 30–50 g
Earbuds with case 45–60 g

A phone, a long wallet, keys, a small pouch and earbuds comes to roughly 550–700 g. Add a 500 ml bottle and you are at about 1.1–1.25 kg of contents. The bottle alone is close to doubling the load, which is why "my bag feels heavy" and "I carried a bottle today" are usually the same complaint.

The 1 kg load line and why shoulders notice it

Keeping contents to around 1 kg is a working guideline, not a rule. Two things make it more than a number on a scale:

  • Time. A 2 kg bag carried for ten minutes is nothing. The same bag for an hour on one shoulder is what people describe as aching by the evening.
  • Asymmetry. One shoulder carries everything, and the body compensates by lifting that shoulder and tilting. Switch sides, or use a longer strap that lets the bag sit across the body so both shoulders share it.

If you regularly go over 1 kg of contents, the fix is usually subtraction: the bottle, the umbrella and the just-in-case items are where the weight is.

Why strap width changes what you feel

The same total weight feels different depending on how it is spread. A narrow strap concentrates the load onto a small strip of muscle; a wider one spreads it. This is why a heavy bag on a thin chain is uncomfortable long before the same weight on a flat webbing strap is.

Two practical checks before buying: press the strap between your fingers and imagine that pressure on your shoulder for an hour, and check whether the strap is wide enough not to roll into a cord under load. Rolling is what turns a comfortable strap into a narrow one.

Frequently asked questions

Is 600 g heavy for a bag this size?

For a structured bag, it is normal. For an unstructured one, it is heavy. The trade is shape retention and hardware against grams.

What total weight should I aim for?

Around 1 kg of contents as a working line, so roughly 1.6 kg all-in with a 600 g bag. Above that, most people start to notice it by the end of the day.

Does a crossbody strap spread the load?

It spreads it across the torso rather than hanging it off one shoulder, which most people find better for longer stretches. It also stops the bag sliding, which is a hidden source of the shrug-and-hitch movement that tires a shoulder.

Is there a weight that causes damage?

Not a single threshold you can quote. Discomfort arrives well before injury for most people, and it is a reasonable signal to respond to rather than push through.
