Faux shearling care: the 3 mistakes that permanently flatten the nap

· CloudFlirty· 4 min de lecture

Short answer: never machine-wash faux shearling. Spot-clean with diluted mild detergent, blot rather than rub, rinse with a damp cloth, then brush the nap back up with a soft brush while it is still damp. Air-dry away from direct heat — a radiator or hairdryer sets the fibres permanently.

We have repaired and restyled over 200 faux shearling bags. Here is what actually ruins them.

Faux shearling (the plush, cloud-soft poly used on the Jelkin 25 Cloud) is more forgiving than real shearling, but it fails in three specific, permanent ways. Two of them are actively recommended by low-quality "care" pages you will find in search — so we are setting the record straight.

Mistake 1 — machine washing it

Several spun "how to clean faux shearling" articles suggest putting the item in a delicate bag and machine washing on cold. Do not. Agitation mats the nap, water pools in the backing, and the pile comes out flattened and clumped. Faux shearling is spot-clean only. If a care label ever allowed a full machine wash it would say so explicitly — most do not.

Mistake 2 — rubbing stains instead of blotting

The instinct is to scrub. Rubbing crushes the fibres in one direction and can transfer colour. Always blot: a damp cloth, mild soap, dab — never circle-rub. Work in the direction of the pile and stop as soon as the mark lifts.

Mistake 3 — storing it crushed or in plastic

Shearling loses its shape when compressed, and plastic traps humidity that breeds mildew. Store it stuffed but not squashed in a breathable dust bag, in a cool, dark, dry place. Never hang a loaded bag by one thin strap for months — the shoulder distorts.

The routine that actually works

  • Weekly: a few passes with a soft-bristle clothes brush, in the direction of the pile, to lift dust and restore loft.
  • Spills: blot immediately with a clean dry cloth, then a barely-damp cloth with a drop of mild soap. Air dry away from heat — never a hairdryer.
  • Matting: steam from a safe distance with the nozzle moving; then brush. Heat and direct contact are what set the mat permanently.
  • Off-season: stuff with acid-free tissue, dust bag, cool dark shelf.

What we see most in repairs

The single most common failure we receive is a bag that was machine-washed or left wet in a heap. Both are irreversible. The second is colour transfer from a damp bag pressed against a light jacket. The fix for that is prevention: never store damp.

Bottom line

Treat faux shearling like a structured fabric, not laundry. Blot, brush, air-dry, store loose. Do that and a Jelkin 25 Cloud stays cloud-soft for years — which is exactly why it is the colour we hear about least in customer service.

Method note

Recommendations distilled from in-house repair and restyle work on faux shearling bags; care-label guidance per manufacturer. Always test any cleaner on a hidden area first.

Questions people ask

Can you machine wash a faux shearling bag?

No. Agitation mats the nap and water pools in the backing, and the pile comes out flattened and clumped. It does not recover at home, which is why the “delicate bag on cold” advice you see elsewhere is the single most expensive mistake on this page.

How do you fix matted faux shearling?

Dampen the area with clean water, brush the pile in one direction with a soft-bristle brush, and dry away from heat. Light matting recovers; felted clumps that have been heat-set do not.

How should a faux shearling bag be stored?

Stuffed to hold its shape, inside a breathable dust bag, away from radiators and direct sun. Never sealed in plastic, which traps moisture against the backing.

Is faux shearling the same as faux fur?

Not quite. Faux shearling has a knitted backing with a dense, short pile; faux fur is longer and looser. Shearling-style pile mats more easily and needs brushing rather than combing.

Keep going: the full step-by-step routine is in how to care for a faux shearling bag, shape retention is covered in how to store bags so they keep their shape, and the bag this is written about is the Jelkin 25.
