One Bag, Four Seasons: Building a Year-Round Capsule
Short answer: one bag covers four seasons if it is a neutral colour with a soft, unbranded silhouette; a second colour covers the occasions the first one cannot; and a third bag only earns its place if it does a job neither of the others does. Most people need two. Almost nobody needs five.
The capsule idea gets misapplied to bags. Clothing capsules work because you wear several items at once; bag capsules work differently, because you use one at a time. The right question is not "how few can I own" but "does each bag I own do something the others cannot?".
The three-bag test
The year in one bag
| Season | What changes | The bag |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Lighter layers, one pastel piece | Same bag, pale colour comes into its own |
| Summer | Fewer items, SPF and sunglasses | Same bag, emptied by a third |
| Autumn | Coat pockets take the bulk | Same bag, worn over the coat |
| Winter | Evenings, wet weather, darker colours | Same bag; a dark second colour helps |
The reason one soft bag can do all four is that the silhouette does not have a season. Soft volume is as correct in July as in December; what changes is the colour you reach for and what you put inside. A structured patent tote, by contrast, has a season and it is not summer.

Capsule 1: the one-bag version
One bag, in grey or cream, at $99. This genuinely works if your life is mostly daytime and mostly casual. The colour carries across seasons; the size carries across contexts. The compromise is evenings — a grey bag at a dinner is fine but never interesting.

Capsule 2: the two-bag version (recommended)
One neutral for every day, one colour or black for evenings. This is the version most people should build, and the $169 Duo is designed exactly for it: two colours for $169, which is less than most single contemporary designer bags.
The rule for the second bag is maximum contrast, not similarity. If your everyday bag is grey, the useful second bag is black or lilac — not another grey.

Capsule 3: the three-bag version
Add a third only when it does a distinct job. The only common ones that justify it:
- A seasonal pale bag for spring and summer, if your core is dark.
- A travel-specific bag if you fly often — see what survives a travel day.
- A larger bag for days when you genuinely carry more, kept separate so it does not become the default.
The $249 Trio covers all three slots at $249. Our full capsule-wardrobe breakdown goes deeper on whether you actually need three.

How to audit what you already own
- Empty every bag. Most people discover they own four bags and use two.
- Assign each one a job — everyday, evening, travel, seasonal. Two bags with the same job means one is a duplicate.
- Check the 90-day rule. Anything unused in three months is not in your capsule.
- Buy to fill a gap, not to add a slot. If you cannot name the job the new bag does, you are shopping, not curating.

Frequently asked questions
How many bags do you actually need?
Two covers almost everyone: one neutral for every day and one contrasting colour or black for evenings. One is enough if your life is mostly casual and daytime; three only if each bag has a distinct job.
Can one bag really work all year?
Yes, if it is a neutral colour with a soft, unbranded silhouette. The silhouette has no season; only the colour and the contents change. Structured, shiny or heavily branded bags are the ones that feel wrong out of season.
What is the best capsule bag colour?
Grey or cream for the core, because both work across warm and cool wardrobes and across all four seasons. Add black or a pastel as the second colour depending on whether your gap is evenings or daytime impact.
Is a set better than buying bags separately?
If you are building a capsule from nothing, yes — a set is cheaper per bag and the colours are chosen to contrast. If you already own a core bag, the Extra Bag is the cheapest way to add just the colour you are missing.
How do I stop buying bags I do not use?
Name the job before you buy. If you cannot say which occasion the new bag covers that your current bags do not, it will join the unused pile within a season.
