Is Faux Shearling Vegan?
Faux shearling itself contains no animal skin. But a bag is more than its outer fabric, and the parts people forget — backing, adhesive, trim and thread — are where the honest answer lives.
This is one of the few material questions with a genuinely simple core and a genuinely complicated edge. The core: faux shearling is synthetic pile, not skin. The edge: a finished bag is an assembly, and not every component is necessarily synthetic.
The short answer
Faux shearling is a synthetic pile — typically polyester or acrylic — bonded to a woven or knitted backing. No animal hide is involved in the face fabric.
Whether a finished bag is fully vegan depends on the other components, which is why the honest answer is 'the face fabric is, check the rest'.
What else to check on a bag
- The backing. Usually polyester, but it can be a blend.
- Adhesives. Some laminating adhesives are animal-derived; most modern ones are not.
- Trim and strap. A faux-shearling bag with a leather strap is not vegan.
- Thread and lining. Usually synthetic, worth confirming if it matters to you.
If a product is marketed as vegan, the maker should be able to answer all four. If the listing only says 'faux shearling', that describes the face fabric, not the whole bag.
What faux shearling is made of
- Pile: polyester or acrylic fibres, chosen because they can be made to spring back.
- Backing: a woven or knitted synthetic that carries the load and anchors the pile.
- Bonding: heat or adhesive lamination.
That construction is also why faux shearling behaves differently from real: the backing and the pile are engineered separately, so the maker can choose springiness and strength independently.
Vegan does not automatically mean better
Two honest caveats. First, synthetic pile is a plastic, so it sheds microfibres and is not biodegradable — the environmental comparison with a natural material is not one-way.
Second, 'vegan' says nothing about durability. A poorly made synthetic bag is still a poorly made bag. The four build checks — pile recovery, base, hardware, strap anchors — matter regardless of what the material is made from.
Caring for synthetic pile
- Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; never machine wash.
- Brush the pile in one direction once dry.
- Keep away from direct heat, which melts and mats synthetic fibres.
- Store in a dust bag away from sunlight.
Synthetic pile is easier to live with than real shearling, but heat is its enemy in a way that real wool is not.

The load limit of a 25 cm cloud bag
He is comfortable up to a full everyday carry — phone, long wallet, keys, sunglasses case, a small pouch and a paperback — and that totals comfortably under 2 kg. Past that point the strap is not what gives; the shape is. Overfilling rounds out the top line and the bag stops reading as a cloud. An iPad Mini fits flat, a 13-inch laptop does not, and a hard water bottle is better carried outside. At 25 × 17 × 14 cm and about 600 g empty, he is built for the things you reach for during the day rather than the things you pack once and forget.
How a cloud bag should look after three months
The cheapest copies look fine on day one and tired by month three, and the failure is almost always in the same places. The pile flattens permanently where the arm rests, leaving a shiny patch that no amount of brushing lifts. The base loses its shape and the bag starts to lean rather than stand. And the hardware dulls or the turn-lock loosens, so the top no longer closes square. A well-built 25 cm bag keeps all three: the pile springs back, the base stays flat, and the closure still lands where it did on the first day. That is the difference worth paying for, and you can see it without any expertise.
Why all eleven colours cost the same
A single Jelkin 25 Cloud is $99, and every one of the eleven colours is that same price. Dyeing a pale shade consistently takes more work than a dark one, but we do not pass that on — there is no premium for Blanc or Noir and no discount for the shades that are cheaper to run. Free shipping and duties are included, and the 30-day refund does not ask for a reason. If you want more than one, the Duo is $169, the Trio is $249, and any bag beyond that is $83 each.
Questions people ask before buying
Is faux shearling vegan?
The face fabric is — it is synthetic pile with no animal hide. Whether a finished bag is fully vegan depends on the backing, adhesives, trim and strap, so check those if it matters to you.
What is faux shearling made from?
Polyester or acrylic pile bonded to a woven or knitted synthetic backing. The pile provides the look and spring; the backing provides the strength, which is why the two can be engineered separately.
Is synthetic shearling better for the environment?
Not straightforwardly. It avoids animal hides but it is a plastic that sheds microfibres and does not biodegrade. The honest trade is avoiding animal material versus adding persistent synthetic material.
