How Much Does a 25 cm Bag Hold in Litres?

Jelkin 25 Cloud in Pearl Grey — the 25 cm padded shoulder bag

A 25 × 17 × 14 cm bag works out at about 6 litres on paper and roughly 4–5 litres in practice. The gap between those two numbers is the interesting part.

Capacity figures are published rarely and inconsistently, because they are hard to measure honestly on a soft object. This page does the arithmetic, then explains why the real number is always lower, then gives you something more useful than either.

The arithmetic

  • 25 × 17 × 14 cm = 5,950 cubic centimetres.
  • 1,000 cubic centimetres = 1 litre, so the theoretical volume is about 5.95 litres.
  • Usable volume is lower: corners of a soft bag are not square and the top gathers in.
  • A realistic figure is 4–5 litres.

Why the real number is always lower

  • Corners. A rectangular calculation assumes square corners; a bag has rounded ones.
  • The top. A gathered or compressed opening means the top few centimetres are not really storage.
  • The contents. Rigid objects do not pack to zero waste — a sunglasses case leaves gaps around it that nothing else can use.
  • Comfort. A bag filled to 100% cannot be closed without strain, so the practical limit is lower than the geometric one.

What 4–5 litres looks like

Comparison Volume
Two 2-litre bottles of water 4 L — just under the bag's capacity
A standard wine bottle 0.75 L — about a sixth of the bag
A 500 ml bottle 0.5 L — a tenth
A large paperback Roughly 0.5 L in displacement
A packed 25 cm bag 4–5 L

The two-bottle comparison is the honest one: a 25 cm bag holds slightly less than two 2-litre bottles' worth of stuff, once you accept that contents do not pack perfectly.

How capacity compares up and down

  • A 20 cm flat bag: around 1–2 litres. A phone, a cardholder, keys, and that is it.
  • A 25 cm bag: 4–5 litres. A full day.
  • A 30 cm bag: 7–9 litres. Adds a tablet and a layer of clothing.
  • A small carry-on: 35–40 litres. Roughly eight of these bags.

The jump from 20 to 25 cm roughly triples usable volume, which is a much bigger change than the 5 cm of width suggests.

Why you should not shop by litres

Because the figure is rarely measured the same way twice, and because usable volume depends on shape as much as size. Two bags of identical litre capacity behave differently if one is deep and one is wide — the deep one lets you stack, and stacking is what makes capacity usable.

Shop by the three dimensions and by what you carry, not by a litre figure.

The load limit of a 25 cm cloud bag

He is comfortable up to a full everyday carry — phone, long wallet, keys, sunglasses case, a small pouch and a paperback — and that totals comfortably under 2 kg. Past that point the strap is not what gives; the shape is. Overfilling rounds out the top line and the bag stops reading as a cloud. An iPad Mini fits flat, a 13-inch laptop does not, and a hard water bottle is better carried outside. At 25 × 17 × 14 cm and about 600 g empty, he is built for the things you reach for during the day rather than the things you pack once and forget.

How a well-made cloud bag feels in the hand

Press the pile flat with your thumb and let go. Good shearling rises back within a second or two; cheap padding keeps the dent. Pick the bag up empty — it should stand on its base instead of slumping, which tells you there is structure under the filling rather than filling alone. Then lift it by the strap and give it a small shake: a properly anchored strap ring will not tick or shift. Weight is the last tell. A bag that feels heavy for its size is usually carrying glue and lining rather than structure, and it will sag sooner than a lighter one built the same way.

Why all eleven colours cost the same

A single Jelkin 25 Cloud is $99, and every one of the eleven colours is that same price. Dyeing a pale shade consistently takes more work than a dark one, but we do not pass that on — there is no premium for Blanc or Noir and no discount for the shades that are cheaper to run. Free shipping and duties are included, and the 30-day refund does not ask for a reason. If you want more than one, the Duo is $169, the Trio is $249, and any bag beyond that is $83 each.

Questions people ask before buying

How many litres is a 25 cm bag?

About 4–5 litres of usable volume for a bag measuring 25 × 17 × 14 cm. The theoretical figure is closer to 6 litres, but rounded corners, a gathered top and gaps between rigid objects bring the real number down.

Why do brands rarely publish litre capacity for bags?

Because there is no consistent method for a soft object. Two makers can measure the same bag and get different figures, which is why dimensions and a contents list are more reliable.

Is more litres always better?

No. Capacity you can reach is what matters. A wide, shallow bag can have the same litres as a deep one and be far worse to use, because everything forms a single layer at the bottom.
