Eurowings personal item size: the 40 x 30 x 25 cm small bag in every fare
Short answer: a Eurowings personal item must fit within 40 × 30 × 25 cm (the strictest axis is depth at 25 cm). The Jelkin 25 measures 25 × 17 × 14 cm on the outside, so it clears the depth limit by 11 cm and qualifies as a free under-seat bag.
Eurowings includes a small underseat bag up to 40 x 30 x 25 cm in every fare — Basic, Smart and BIZclass alike. That is unusually generous for a personal item, and it is the reason this article exists: several comparison sites still describe a 40 x 30 x 10 cm limit for the Smart fare, which is not what Eurowings publishes.
What differs between fares is not the small bag but the large one.
The official Eurowings cabin allowance
| Basic | Smart | BIZclass | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small underseat bag (40 x 30 x 25 cm) | Included | Included | Included |
| Large cabin bag (55 x 40 x 23 cm, 8 kg) | Optional, from about €21 | Included — 1 piece | Included — 2 pieces |
Every passenger gets the small bag. The large cabin bag is what you pay for on Basic, and it comes free on Smart and BIZclass. Eurowings states that the size and number of bags are checked for every passenger.
The 25 cm dimension is the one that distinguishes Eurowings: it is the depth of the space under the seat, and it is far more than most European carriers allow for a personal item.
Where a 25 cm bag sits inside 40 x 30 x 25
A structured bag measuring 25 x 17 x 14 cm fits this allowance in any orientation. Length against length it is 25 against 25 — exactly at the limit — but rotate it and it is 25 of length against 30 of width, or 14 of depth against 25. There is no axis on which it fails.
This is a genuinely comfortable fit rather than a borderline one, which changes how you can use the bag: it does not need to be compressed to go under the seat, so a structured bag keeps its shape, and there is floor area left around it.
What the Basic fare means in practice
- Basic includes the small underseat bag only. A trolley is not included and must be added.
- Adding the large cabin bag costs from about €21 depending on route and timing, and it comes with priority boarding.
- Because the small bag allowance is 25 cm deep, a 25 cm handbag is a realistic primary bag on a Basic fare for a short trip — which is not true on airlines that allow 10 or 15 cm.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Eurowings small bag 40 x 30 x 10, 40 x 30 x 15 or 40 x 30 x 25 cm?
40 x 30 x 25 cm, in every fare, according to Eurowings' own hand baggage page. The 40 x 30 x 10 cm figure was the old Basic allowance before August 2021.
Does the Smart fare have a smaller personal item than Basic?
No. Both include the same 40 x 30 x 25 cm small bag. Smart adds the large cabin bag.
Is there a weight limit on the small bag?
Eurowings publishes the small bag by dimension and lists the 8 kg limit for the large cabin bag.
Do partner airlines follow the same rules?
The published rules apply to flights with an EW flight number. On flights operated by a partner airline — Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels, Condor, United, Air Canada, ANA — that carrier's rules apply.
Check it against the others: the airline personal item size checker puts this allowance next to 18 other carriers and tells you whether a 25 × 17 × 14 cm bag passes.
Same region, different rule
Eurowings is the outlier in its own group: the small bag is 40 × 30 × 25 cm, while Lufthansa and SWISS cap the second item at 40 × 30 × 15 cm. If you connect between them, the tighter number is the one that applies.
- Lufthansa personal item size — 40 × 30 × 15 cm — 10 cm shallower than the Eurowings small bag
- SWISS personal item size — 40 × 30 × 15 cm, the same as Lufthansa
- Condor personal item size — 40 × 30 × 15 cm, with a new rule taking effect on 1 May 2026
Not sure how these allowances are written in the first place? The rules explained covers why the same bag is free on one carrier and a paid extra on another. The bag measured throughout this page is the Jelkin 25, 25 × 17 × 14 cm on the outside.
Questions people ask
What is Eurowings' personal item size?
40 × 30 × 25 cm, and it must go under the seat in front of you. It is free in addition to the cabin bag on most fares, as long as it fits the sizer.
Does a 25 × 17 × 14 cm bag fit Eurowings?
Yes. At 14 cm deep it sits 11 cm inside Eurowings's 25 cm depth cap, and it is shorter and narrower than the other two axes as well, so it drops into the sizer with room to spare.
Does the limit include handles and wheels?
Yes. Where Eurowings publishes a personal-item size, the figure is the outside of the bag including handles, wheels and any fixed straps.
