Does a 25cm Bag Fit a Small Notebook?

Short answer: an A6 notebook fits comfortably; A5 fits but only just, and it takes the last free corner. If you write in it once or twice a day and carry nothing else unusual, A5 is fine. If you also want a water bottle, a pouch or a paperback in there, A6 is the honest choice — and A6 is the size most people actually use anyway.

This is one of the few capacity questions where the answer genuinely depends on one other item, so it is worth deciding that first.

A6 or A5: how to choose

Size Fits with full everyday load? Best for
A6 (pocket) Yes, with room left Lists, notes, a daily page. Most people.
A5 (medium) Yes, but it is the last item in Journaling, meeting notes, anything you write at length.
A4 No Different bag, different day.

The practical test is not whether the notebook goes in — it is whether you can get it out one-handed while standing up. An A5 in a loaded 25 comes out with a fight. An A6 slides.

Does the pen matter?

More than the notebook. A fat multi-pen or a fountain pen in a hard case occupies a surprising amount of a small bag, and it is usually wedged diagonally across the opening so nothing else can be reached easily.

A slim pen, or one clipped to the notebook's cover, is the difference between a bag that works and a bag you have to tip out to use. If you write a lot, a pen loop on the notebook is worth paying for.

What about a tablet instead?

An iPad Mini fits a 25cm bag — that is one of the reasons the size became popular. But a tablet and a notebook together is a different proposition: the tablet takes the flat back panel, and the notebook then has to lie against it, which makes both harder to reach.

Will an iPad Mini fit? covers the dimensions properly if you are weighing one against the other. Most people who switch to a tablet stop carrying paper within about two weeks.

How do you keep a soft-sided notebook from bending?

This is the real complaint about carrying paper in a padded bag. A soft-cover notebook curls over time if it is always wedged against something curved.

  • Lie it flat against the lining, not rolled against the base.
  • Pick a hard cover if you keep it in the bag permanently — the extra two millimetres are worth it.
  • Do not stack it under keys. Key rings are what dent soft covers.

If you want the wider capacity picture before committing, what really fits in a 25cm bag runs the same test across twenty-odd items.

Does the bag still close flat with a notebook in it?

Usually, but it depends on the closure. A turn-lock closure gives you one fixed position — if the contents are thicker than the strap allows, the lock simply will not meet, and that is your answer. A zip closure will usually tolerate more, because the teeth pull the sides in rather than meeting at a set point.

This sounds like an argument for zips and it partly is, but there is a reason a small structured closure is worth it: it tells you the truth. A bag that will not close is telling you that you are carrying too much, and a zip that stretches around the same load is hiding it. The stretched zip is also what eventually fails.

The practical test is the one you would do in a shop: put your real load in, close it, then open and close it three times. If it gets easier each time, the bag is moulding to the load and you are fine. If it gets harder, you are at the limit.

Is a small bag actually a good writing bag?

It is a good noting bag, which is different. If your writing happens at a desk, at a cafe table or on a train with the bag on the seat beside you, a 25 is ideal — the notebook comes out, gets used, goes back. If you write standing up, on a crowded platform, or for long stretches, you will want somewhere to put the bag down and a bigger surface.

What to carry to a cafe work session is the honest version of this: the bag is fine, the session is the thing that needs planning.

Where to start

A flat base and a lined interior keep a notebook straight and reachable in a 25cm bag. All eleven colours sit at the same price: $99 each, $169 for two, $249 for three. If you want two shades rather than one, the duo is the cheaper way to do it, and the trio covers three.

Colours: black, cream, grey, biscuit, nata, lilac, green, sakura pink, butter yellow, royal blue, orange.

The short version

  • A6 fits easily; A5 fits but takes the last corner.
  • Slim pen, or clipped to the cover.
  • Notebook or tablet — not both.
  • Hard cover if it lives in the bag.
  • Judge it by getting it out one-handed, not by getting it in.

Frequently asked questions

Will an A5 notebook fit in a 25cm bag?

Yes, but it will be the last thing you put in and the first thing you have to take out to reach anything else. With a slim pen and a normal load it closes fine; add a pouch or a bottle and it starts to strain.

Is A6 too small to be useful?

For lists, notes and a daily page, no. A6 is roughly the size of a large phone, which is the size people have been writing quick notes on for fifteen years. It feels small in a shop and fine in a bag.

Should I carry a notebook if I have a phone?

Only if you write by hand for a reason — memory, thinking, or preference. If you would type the same note, the phone wins and the notebook is weight.

How do I stop the cover bending?

Choose a hard cover, lie it flat against the lining, and keep keys off it. Most bent covers come from being wedged against something curved for weeks rather than from a single incident.

Does a padded bag damage paper?

No, but it does not protect it either. A padded exterior protects your phone from knocks; paper needs a rigid surface, which is what the hard cover is for.
